SEJARAH SUKU LIO
Hello friends, let me introduce myself, my name is Yohanes Don Bosko Nurak. Here I will explain a little about the history of the Lio tribe..
The Lio tribe (Ata Li'o) is an ethnic group that inhabits the central part of Flores Island. The Lio people generally live in the sub-districts of Wolowaru, Ndona, East Ndona, Detusoko, East Lio, Maurole, Detukeli, Ndori, Kelimutu, several areas in the sub-districts of Maukaro, Lepembusu Kelisoke, Kotabaru, Wolojita, and Wewaria. The population of the Lio people numbered around 300,000 people in 1998. The Lio tribe also occupies the western part of the Sikka Regency area, namely in the sub-districts of Paga, Mego, Tanawawo and Magepanda.
According to local oral tradition, the Lio tribe were the first humans in the Ende-Lio region to descend from the highest mountain, namely Mount Lepembusu, which is in the residential area of Lepembusu village. The Lio tribe in Wolotolo village is led by four Mosalaki (tribal chiefs) and seven Kopokasas (deputy tribal chiefs). The tribal chief and his deputy hold their respective roles in accordance with the duties mandated by them from generation to generation from their previous ancestors. The four tribal chiefs lived in their respective sao ria (big houses). The Lio tribe in Wolotolo village has various elements of traditional residential buildings ranging from sao ria (big house), sao keda (deliberation place), kanga (circle arena), tubu musu (stone monument), rate (grave), and kebo ria ( barn). The traditional buildings of the Lio tribe have various forms according to their respective functions.
there are also those who think they came from the Wehali region on the island of Timor. This person is Lio Laka who landed in the current Wewaria sub-district. This shows that the version says that the Lio people are descendants of the Tetun Malaka people who came from Timor Island which is located south of Flores Island.
The Lio tribe is known to hold firmly to their beliefs and beliefs in the highest being called Du'a Ngga'e (god), Nitupa'i (the spirits who are most feared and must be respected), Atamata or Babo Mamo (ancestors) who must be respected. . In this context, Du'a Ngga'e is at the peak point which must be worshiped. Meanwhile, Nitupa'i and Atamata must be respected. The Lio tribe people also believe in supernatural powers and believe that the spirits of their ancestors and natural spirits are very influential in their lives. Although a small number still practice the indigenous religion of the archipelago (ancestral religion), currently almost the entire Lio community has largely adhered to Abrahamic religions, namely Catholicism and Islam. Currently, the majority of the Lio tribe adheres to Catholicism and the remainder adheres to Islam.
